Tory Housing Crisis

LHC_leaflet_front.jpgThe Tories are out of touch, and you're out of pocket.

The Tories have caused a housing crisis in London.

  • House building is at the lowest level since 1924

  • London rents are rising at 10% a year

  • Home ownership in London is falling

  • The average age of a first time buyer is now 38

  • The average London rent is now more than half of the average London income

  • More than 55,000 Londoners have been hit by the Bedroom Tax

  • The Tory Mayor of London is missing his own targets for building new affordable homes

Tackling the housing crisis is Labour’s number one priority in London

Labour councils will tackle London’s housing crisis

  • Build more genuinely affordable homes
  • Tackle rogue landlords and rip-off letting agencies
  • Build more homes for London’s growing population
  • Bring empty homes back into use
  • Create jobs and apprenticeships in the building industry
  • Labour will repeal the Bedroom Tax

UPDATE: Labour will make renting more affordable and secure

Ed Miliband has launched Labour’s plan to make renting more affordable and secure. We will change the law to ban letting agencies from charging tenants fees of up to £500 and make renting more secure and affordable.

Tenants will be allowed to stay in their homes for up to three years if they choose to and we will cap the amount rents can increase by over this period. Our plans will make life easier for the millions of Londoners who rent – you can read more about it here

Sadiq Khan, Labour’s Shadow London Minister, said:

The housing crisis is the biggest challenge facing London today. Home ownership is out of reach for all but the very wealthiest, rents are rising fast and overcrowding is getting worse. London desperately needs more homes. Labour will tackle the London Housing Crisis in Westminster and in Town Halls in London. We will build more affordable homes, tackle rogue landlords and create jobs in the construction industry. Londoners who want to tackle the London Housing Crisis should vote for a Labour Councils at the local elections in May.

I am shocked and appalled at the way in which people I care about are forced into substandard housing. I have nothing but rage at the Conservative government – they refuse to address the more pressing need for affordable housing, instead giving preferencial treatment to the advancement of high priced or luxury accomodation, out of reach for the average UK citizen.

In the past, I have been forced into situations where I either cope with housing that is borderline fail for health and safety in order to keep my rent affordable or face perpetual homelessnesss. The Conservatives are keeping people who work hard but do not have financial affluence squashed in a situation where thousands are inadqeuately housed.

I have lived here for 15 years and have felt secure until the Tories came to power and Boris Johnson became mayor. Since house prices soared landlords are either selling or upping the rent to make it unaffordable. My landlord penhurst properties ) are dumping there tenants with eviction (including me) so they can charge the earth to rich people and do what Boris Johnson said he WOULDNT do and social cleanse ordinary people from there homes. Boris Johnson planned this no doubt. Leaving me and others homeless. Even the council can’t cope so where are people soppose to live ??. The Torys couldn’t care less. They would make us live in a cave if they could. So yes I will be homeless soon after 15 years of thinking I was secure. NOT !. I know who I will be voting at it won’t be the heartless irresponsible Tories.

I am a single mum of 7 when the benefit cap came in I was unemployed but actively seeking work with a named advisor at croydon jobcentre, anyway my landlord started the eviction process instead of helping us stay and seek alternative accommodation we were sent away to Birmingham, I found work in London and returned as the letting agent in Birmingham demanded money for renewal fees that I simply had no money to pay, facing eviction now in Birmingham we returned to London staying with a relative and I found a job in asda. the council in croydon said we are intentionally homeless and I now face living in my car or a squat with my children as we are in emergency accommodation in a hotel apartment, and have been told we are costing.g too much for them. now even in work the Tories policies are destroying our lives, and only today l had a meeting with croydon social services as they are paying the hotel bill, I was told to consider giving up work go back on income support as on Friday they wish to show me properties outside London,no regard for the upheaval of my 15 year old on her gcse work being moved also my other children at a good school doing well.

Well I am now priced out of north london, from Camden into Finsbury park now in Bow in east London.

Its not bad here, I like it in Bow, but I got a bit attached to my old home in finsbury park and miss it.

Only a matter of time before I’m shoved out of zone 2 by the tories, unless Labour take action so millions of londoners like me don’t get shoved out of london to make way for the rich tory people to suck the life out of this city.

So I’m voting Labour, at least they try to make life fair for everyone, not just the wankers that run around with their noses in the air and fat wallets.

Due to the boom in property and rental prices I was forced to move out of my city in order to provide more than just an existence for my family. Give back London to the people who made it great and not the faceless wonders.

I have been living in a rented house for the 14 years, not knowing from one month to the next whether I will have to move. I have 2 children now young adults. I have worried every month for the last 14 years about whether I can scrabble together enough money to pay the rent. I have paid over £250,000 in rent in that period and have nothing to show for it. I am now having to move out, but will not be able to afford a home big enough to house us even if we all chip in. My children cannot afford the deposit and rent needed for a place of their own nor can they see any prospect of owning their own home. I have worked hard all my life and am angry that I am now facing middle / old age with no home I can call my own even in terms of stability and security. The system has failed many many hard working decent families. Something must be done quickly!
