Heidi Alexander, Labour’s MP for Lewisham East who spearheaded the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign in Parliament said today (31st July):
“Today, seven months since Jeremy Hunt announced his plans to decimate A&E and maternity services at Lewisham Hospital, the High Court quashed his decision, stating that the Secretary of State acted unlawfully.
“This is a victory for Lewisham and a victory for campaigners across the country who are fighting to protect and enhance our NHS.
“When Jeremy Hunt and the Coalition Government took the decision to decimate services at Lewisham – a solvent, successful hospital - to solve financial problems elsewhere, you didn’t have to be a lawyer to sense that it was a huge injustice.
“The ruling today puts right this injustice and makes clear that the Secretary of State was acting unlawfully. The Government may think they are above the law, but they are not.
“I applaud Lewisham Council and the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign for pursuing the Government in the courts. If it wasn’t for their challenges, justice for Lewisham would not have been done as it has been today.”
