Improving social conditions at work

Labour MEPs have worked hard in the European Parliament to create jobs and strengthen your rights at work.

When the Labour Government came to power in 1997, one of its first actions was to sign up to the 'Social Chapter' of the European Treaty. Labour MEPs worked with the government to bring in a raft of laws to protect workers and improve social conditions at work.

This legislation includes a guaranteed right to four weeks paid holiday, parental leave after birth or adoption, and measures to give part time workers the same rights as full time workers as regards training, pensions, maternity rights and leave.

"Labour MEPs have also helped deliver some really important advances in anti-discrimination law. This includes banning discrimination on the grounds of race, age, religion, sexual orientation and disability.

Without the hard work of Labour MEPs, these laws may never have become a reality. Labour MEPs will keep working for an EU which promotes more and better jobs."
