Gordon Brown visits ‘Inspirational’ East London Community Organisation

Labour’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown visited the Bromley-by-Bow Centre in East London. Gordon Brown met local residents who have been given support by the Bromley-by-Bow Centre to set up new social enterprises including Jim Blakemore, Manager of Bikeworks. Bike works was named UK's 'Best New Social Enterprise in 2009.

The Prime Minister was joined by his wife Sarah and local Poplar and Canning Town Labour MP Jim Fitzpatrick.

The Bromley-by-Bow Centre employs over 100 people and provides a range of services for the local community including the support for local residents who want to set up new social enterprises. Last year the Bromley-by-Bow Centre received over £2.5 million funding from the Labour Government.

Labour is committed to building a high tech economy, supporting business, creating 1 million more skilled jobs and protecting frontline investment.

Gordon Brown said,

‘’The Bromley-by-Bow Centre offers a remarkable range of services to the community. It is an organisation that has inspired local residents and has created hundreds of new jobs.
‘Only Labour is committed to developing a highly-skilled London and supporting the innovation that has made the Bromley-by-Bow centre such a success.

‘We are committed to securing future economic growth and creating 1 million more skilled jobs. The Tories would threaten the recovery and the support that is helping Londoners back into work.’’

Jim Fitzpatrick said

‘The remarkable work by staff and volunteers has created hundreds of new jobs for local residents and brought communities together. That's why Labour backed the Bromley-by-Bow Centre with over £2.5million funding last year.

‘In contrast to Labour’s support for business and our commitment to create new jobs in London, the Tories would threaten the future development of the capital and put the recovery at risk.’’
